Mountaintop-Removal Mining
A yes vote was to shelve the proposed "Stream Buffer Zone Rule."

Voting 235 for and 188 against, the House on Jan. 12, 2016, passed a GOP-sponsored bill (HR 1644) that would shelve a new federal rule aimed at protecting streams and drinking water from pollution caused by mountaintop-removal coal mining. The rule addresses the practice of companies blasting mountaintops and then dumping fractured rocks and other debris into nearby streams and valleys. The bill would delay implementation of the rule until the National Academy of Sciences has completed a study of its impact.

Calling the rule part of the administration's "continuous war on coal," Alex Mooney, R-W.Va., said it would cost "between 30,000 and 50,000 jobs in the Appalachian region" and prove "catastrophic to the hardworking American families that depend on coal to keep their energy costs low."

John Yarmuth, D-Ky., said "the consequences of mountaintop removal have created a public health crisis, with families living near or downstream of these mining sites experiencing higher rates of cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, birth defects and infant mortality."

A yes vote was to shelve the proposed "Stream Buffer Zone Rule."
